Nothing is better for your health than a good night's sleep. It is said that we spend 30% or more of our lives sleeping, which is why it is important to maintain beding materials by cleaning them regularly.
Lest's start with bed linen, with which our skin is inclose contact while we are sleeping. Many people recommend cotton because it is perfect for any season and it becomes softer with repeated washings and uses. For longevity of the fabrics and espacially the colors on cotton prints, they should be machine-washed on a warm setting with mild detergents. To prevent fading, don't use bleach or expose them to direct sunlight when drying.
Another item needing special care is the mattress. One of the largest causes of a steal-smelling and allergy-unfriendly mattress is accumulation of dust mites. However, you can control this quite simply. Once a month, on a dry sunny day, take your mattress outside and spend a few moments vacuuming the dust mites on each face and the sides.
Let the sun naturally bake the mattress until it is fresh before bringing it inside. Then, rotate it, flipping it over so that the face that was on top becomes the bottom. Another tip to maintain freshness is to strip the bedspread and all bed linens before going away for the weekend. A mattress is like a person, it needs a chance to breath!
Just as the mattress supports your back while sleeping, pillows provide your neck with support and utmost comfort. Nowadays, cleaning large soft pillows is easy. You can wash them at home in a washing machine with a few additional precautions.
Set your washer on a gentle wash cycle and press the extra rinse button if available. If not, put the pillow through the final rinse cycle another time or two to fully rinse out any bubbles. Next, spin dry at least twice to get as much moisture out of your pillow as possible. Then, place it in the dryer for drying, which might take several hours.
Finally, hang the pillow in a dry location for 1-2 days to make sure it is completely dry before returning it to your bed.
By following these methods, you will breath healthy air during your 8 hours sleep and your bedding items will last much longer.
